The extent of wildlife fencing along these roads is unclear, but research shows it can greatly reduce collisions and support habitat connectivity, especially when paired with crossing structures. Standard DOT fencing works for large mammals but fails to exclude smaller species like reptiles, amphibians, and small mammals. Studies and observations confirm that solid barriers are more effective, preventing access and reducing risks such as climbing, digging, entanglement, and pacing.
Improving Wildlife Fencing on Roads
The United States alone has over 3.9 million miles of road.
This effectiveness is believed to result from the sensory barrier that solid materials provide. When animals cannot see through a fence, they are less likely to linger or interact with it. Instead, they tend to move along the barrier toward safe crossing structures or return to adjacent habitats.
To address this need, we have developed a unique set of specifications and guidelines showing how Animex’s most popular wildlife exclusion fencing products can be attached to standard DOT woven wire fencing for large mammals, enhancing protection for both people and wildlife.
The same fencing can also be attached to any roadside structures, including chain-link fences, livestock fencing, and guardrails, to achieve the same level of protection.
